Scarlett Middle School
Fall 2011 Update
What’s Happening?
Weekly Project Healthy Schools (PHS) activities start in mid-January. Scarlett Wellness Champions Laura Hurst and Matt Hughes have been helping to work out a teaching schedule and determine prop storage so the activities will start off will a bang! In the meantime, both Laura and Matt have been working with their advisories to get ideas from kids about what health initiatives they want to see at Scarlett. These kids have also been helping to write health messages in the announcements and work on other projects that promote health in the school.
Looking Ahead
The weekly activities begin in January, 2012 in all the sixth grade advisory classrooms. Ask your student what day they have PHS in their advisory.
Health Team Updates
- The Scarlett School Health Team organized a Fall Fun Run in November. All kids went outside during advisory to complete a 1/2 mile walk/run and then were able to participate in field games like soccer, tossing Frisbees, and sack races. This is the 2nd annual Fun Run and it was very well received.
- The team is currently working on planning the 2nd annual open gym night, where Scarlett families come and use the gym and pool to engage in some fun physical activity. This is also a fundraiser for the health team.
- Additionally, the team is has promoted ways to incorporate physical activity into the classroom and the use of non-food classroom and school-wide rewards.
- We are always looking for more parents and students to get involved! We meet once per month, after school. If you would like to be part of this group, please contact Lindsey Mitchell at lseyfert@umich.edu
