Slauson Middle School
Fall 2011 Update
What’s Happening?
Slauson is gearing up for the Project Healthy Schools activities in January in the sixth grade advisory classrooms. Volunteers called Health Ambassadors who are mostly UM graduate and undergraduate students, trained by PHS, lead the lessons. They visit the classrooms weekly to present one of 10 lessons that focus on these PHS goals:
PHS Goal
---
Eat more fruits and vegetables
Eat less fast and fatty foods
Spend less mindless time in front of screens
Drink milk, water, and juice.
Get at least 150 minutes of activity a week.
Involving the students and using lots of props brings the lessons to life. Students learn to think critically about their food and activity choices and how to make better choices.
This fall lots of advisory classes borrowed a bag of sports equipment from their house office when they went outside. Thanks to last year's health team the PTSO provided funds to fill two duffle bags (one for each house office) with sports equipment. Reports are that the bags were in constant use this fall and the equipment didn't disappear. The equipment in the bags is now being used inside when advisories are luck enough to have access to an open gym. Thanks to all for fitting in more activity and taking the time to take care of the equipment. A big thanks to the PTSO, too!
December brought a new activity to Slauson advisory classrooms. Lori McNutt, the PHS Wellness Champ at Slauson challenged each advisory to participate in a Jammin' Minute® routine for eight out of ten days. JAMmin' Minute® is a one-minute fitness routine that includes 5 very simple exercises that kids (and staff) can do while either standing at their desks or sitting in a chair. Several groups took the challenge and got more active! Check out the routines at www.JAMschoolprogram.com Remember the PHS goal is to get at least 30 minutes of activity every day. Why not consider dropping your child off a couple of blocks from school in the morning to increase activity or going for a family walk?
Cafeteria Updates
The cafeteria staff was a big help getting the free Farm to School foods out for 10 weeks this fall. Look for more produce samples in the spring!
Chef Neil from Chartwells created a tasty stir fry made with regionally grown vegetables in October and lots of 6th, 7th and 8th graders enjoyed sampling his delicious entree. Thank you, Chartwells for all you do to get regionally grown produce to the cafeteria.
Looking Ahead
- Stay tuned for some fun in March, National Nutrition Month.
- Healthy Habits Challenge will follow the 10 PHS lessons.
- Keep your eyes peeled for a bright yellow chicken that's helping make Slauson a healthier place!
- A brand new last day of school event is being planned!
Health Team Updates
A Healthy Schools Inventory was completed and will be used as a tool to guide this year's activities. January features staff members modeling healthy behaviors for their students. Staff are completing and posting "I Will" statements that show everyone what healthy habit they are working on in 2012. The "I Will" poster might say, "I Will get half an hour of activity in every day." or "I Will eat a variety of vegetables every week." Look for these signs when you are in the school!
