Tappan Middle School
Winter 2012 Update
What’s Happening?
The 10 Project Healthy Schools (PHS) activities have finished at Tappan! Since the fall update, the students have tested their heart rates during different physical activities, made their own yummy seasonal salad, created advertisements for healthy foods, learned about super-sizing and screen time through fun, interactive games and reviewed all 10 PHS activities with a trivia challenge. The students even won fruit and vegetable wash-off tattoos and PHS cinch sacks. The prizes were a hit!

Seasonal Salad Recipe
Mix 1-2 bags of baby spinach, 1 cup shredded carrots, 1/2 red pepper (diced), 1 apple (diced), and a handful of each: golden raisins, dried blueberries and sunflower seeds. For the dressing, mix 2 T olive oil, 1 T lemon juice and 1/2 T honey. Toss the salad with the dressing and enjoy!

Looking Ahead
Next up will be the Healthy Habits Challenge, where advisories compete to see who can score the most healthy habits! There will also be some opportunities to do PHS extension activities in advisory.
Health Team Updates
Wellness Champion Sarah Frantom (7th grade teacher) has been leading the school health team and extending PHS messages throughout the school. Updates include:
- The Tappan School Health Team continues to meet monthly. We are working on a school visit from a UM athlete and planning other activities for the year, including a field day.
- We are always looking for more parents and students to get involved! If you would like to be part of this group, please contact Lindsey Mitchell at lseyfert@umich.edu
