Winter 2012 Update
This fall, half of the 6th grade class completed the PHS lessons. The lessons brought the PHS goals to life:
Remember the 5 PHS goals!
Eat more fruits and vegetables
Eat less fast and fatty foods
Spend less mindless time in front of screens
Drink milk, water, and juice.
Get at least 150 minutes of activity a week.
Activities focused on a variety of issues, including:
- nutrition literacy
- making better beverage choices
- cardiovascular health
- food traditions
- healthy habits
We made a Michigan Fall Salad with foods that are locally and seasonally available. Here's the salad recipe so you can try it at home:
- Spinach (or any greens you have on hand)
- Carrots, chopped or grated
- Dried or fresh blueberries (or dried cherries, fresh orange slices, pineapple tidbits)
- Sweet peppers, chopped (or celery, red onions, cukes, what you have on hand)
- Sunflower seeds (or nuts)
- Raisins (or any other dried fruit)
Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and then toss with the salad dressing made from 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon lemon juice and just a little honey to sweeten it. ENJOY!!
Later in the curriculum, we learned about how media shapes our perceptions about health. We explored how to recognize advertisements and saw the need to educate and inform ourselves about nutrition. Then accurate commercials and public service announcements about popular junk food were created by the students.
Sixth grade students are also participating in an after school YMCA program where they are learning swimming skills and various land-based physical activities.
UPA does have a usable salad bar though we will need additional equipment to make the bar fully operational. We are in the midst of researching possibilities of how to obtain this equipment and garnering support from the school to staff the salad bar at lunch.
The second half of the YMCA program will carry on into next year. Our second round of teaching will begin early in 2012.
