Spring 2012 Update
UPSM Middle School
What’s Happening?
PHS Staff Alison Heeres is busy completing PHS lessons with the last 80 sixth graders at UPSM to get the education.
Over spring break PHS staff ran a garden camp that brought youth to the UPSM school garden three hours a week. They learned about gardening, making healthy snacks, and how to be physically active.
The students did a great job kicking off the UPSM school garden and classes will come to the garden to plant and harvest as the season continues.
Beginning next week UPSM six graders will begin the eight-week PHS YMCA program that offers twice weekly aquatics and land sports at the Boll Family Y.
Cafeteria Updates
PHS Staff has had a great time implementing farm to school activities in the cafeteria. Since the New Year UPSM students have had taste tests and in-cafeteria education for
- Sweet Seasonal Citrus
- Great Grains
- Where Does It Grow? (Michigan Vegetables!)

Looking Ahead
PHS staff and UPSM staff and students are excited about the upcoming field trips to D-Town farms, the four-acre urban farm located in Detroit's Rouge Park. All sixth and seventh graders can attend.

Cafeteria Updates
PHS staff continues to support and conduct programming for the high school G3 garden. This year high school students will be a part of Youth Grown Detroit, a collaborative program of the Garden Resource Program and Greening of Detroit, that brings youth to the Eastern Farmers Market to sell their items.
Another exciting update is that UPSM High will have a team competing in the Next Urban Chef competition. This culinary program provides food system education and culinary workshops for Detroit youth. It culminates in a seasonal culinary competition where local chefs face off with the help of local high school teams.
